Seams Deaf Pro Foundation: Redefining Possibility Through Deaf Arts and Inclusion
At Seams Deaf Pro Foundation, we believe that Deafness is not a limitation. It is a powerful identity, a language, and a source of artistic brilliance. Founded with a clear mission to amplify Deaf voices through the performing arts, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation has grown into one of Africa’s most dynamic platforms for Deaf creativity, advocacy, and inclusion.
From Nigeria to Ghana and across the continent, our work continues to challenge stereotypes, open doors, and prove that Deaf artists belong at the centre of cultural conversations, not on the margins.
Where Art Meets Advocacy
Seams Deaf Pro Foundation uses dance, theatre, storytelling, and multidisciplinary performance as tools for advocacy and social change. Every performance we create goes beyond entertainment. It is a statement of visibility, dignity, and capability.
Through over forty original choreographed advocacy pieces, our Deaf artists have addressed themes such as inclusion, education, gender equality, disability rights, and social justice. These works have been staged locally and internationally in collaboration with respected institutions including the British Council, UNICEF, Oxfam, and other cultural and development organisations.
Deaf Can Dance: A Movement, Not Just a Program
One of our flagship initiatives, Deaf Can Dance, has evolved into a movement of empowerment for Deaf dancers across Africa. What began as a creative experiment is now a structured platform for training, mentorship, and professional development.
Deaf Can Dance has trained and mentored emerging Deaf dancers, created performance opportunities for all Deaf dance ensembles, challenged misconceptions about Deaf bodies and movement, and built confidence and leadership among Deaf youth.
Through this programme, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation is proud to be the custodian of Deaf Can Dance Crew, Nigeria’s first all Deaf dance crew, now widely recognised for its artistic excellence and powerful storytelling.
All Africa Deaf Arts Festival: A Continental Stage
The All Africa Deaf Arts Festival stands as one of Seams Deaf Pro Foundation’s most ambitious and impactful initiatives. The festival brings together Deaf artists from across Africa and beyond, creating a rare space where Deaf creativity takes centre stage.
Each edition of the festival features Deaf led performances and showcases, workshops and masterclasses, artistic exchanges and collaborations, and conversations on accessibility, inclusion, and policy.
The festival does more than celebrate art. It builds networks, strengthens capacity, and creates lasting international collaborations. With the upcoming All Africa Deaf Arts Festival 5.0, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation continues to position Africa as a hub for Deaf artistic innovation.
Training, Mentorship, and Long Term Impact
Beyond performances and festivals, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation invests deeply in capacity building. Our workshops, creative camps, and mentorship programmes equip Deaf youth with artistic, technical, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the stage.
Initiatives such as the You Can Creative Camp and the evolving You Can Ambassadors Programme ensure that Deaf young people are not only trained as artists but empowered as role models, mentors, and cultural influencers within their communities.
Accessibility as a Core Value
Accessibility is at the heart of everything we do. Our projects are designed with professional sign language interpretation, Deaf friendly rehearsal and performance processes, inclusive audience engagement, and collaborative spaces where Deaf artists lead creatively.
By embedding accessibility from the start, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation models what truly inclusive arts practice looks like.
Global Collaboration with Local Roots
While proudly rooted in Nigeria, Seams Deaf Pro Foundation works across borders. Our collaborations span Africa and Europe, including partnerships with organisations such as Deaf Rave UK, PACE, and the National Black Theatre of Sweden.
These exchanges enable artist residencies and co creation labs, cross continental learning, international exposure for African Deaf artists, and sustainable long term partnerships.
Through these collaborations, Deaf artists from Africa are not merely participants. They are co creators and leaders on the global stage.
Our Vision
We envision a world where Deaf artists are recognised as professionals, accessibility is embedded in cultural systems, Deaf stories are told by Deaf people, and artistic spaces reflect true diversity and inclusion.
Seams Deaf Pro Foundation exists to make this vision a reality, one performance, one artist, and one collaboration at a time.
Join the Journey
Whether as a partner, donor, artist, volunteer, or audience member, there is a place for you in this movement. Together, we can continue to reshape narratives, expand opportunities, and celebrate the extraordinary power of Deaf arts.
